FURTHER CHARACTERISTICS

- Combined Cycle Power Plant Heilbronn (HLB8)
   Electrical output: 675 MW
   Thermal input: 1,140 MW
Thermal output for district heating: 190 MW

   Electrical output: 665 MW
   Thermal input: 1,140 MW
Thermal output for district heating: 180 MW

Together with Drees & Sommer, EnBW is taking a significant step towards a more sustainable and future-proof energy supply. As part of Germany’s coal phase-out and the company’s decarbonisation strategy, EnBW plans to decommission its coal-fired power stations in Heilbronn and Altbach/Deizisau.

Each site will be replaced by a natural gas-fired, hydrogen-ready combined cycle power plant, which is designed to generate electricity and heat through combined heat and power (CHP).

Full-scope construction site management

Drees & Sommer will be responsible for most construction site management tasks, including construction management, specialised construction supervision across trades, and commissioning coordination. In addition, Drees & Sommer experts will support the technical aspects of commercial and contractual execution, as well as interface and site coordination and technical quality assurance during assembly. They also play a key role in scheduling and construction monitoring.

ADDED VALUE

  • Reliable transition to more sustainable energy sources and technologies
  • Efficient and seamless construction site operations

SERVICES

  • Construction site management (including project management, deputy site management, specialized trade supervision, commissioning coordination, technical quality assurance during assembly, scheduling, and construction monitoring)

“We’re pleased that we can rely on expert partners like Drees & Sommer during this crucial phase of the energy transition.”

PROJECT GOALS: Modernization and decarbonization of the Heilbronn and Altbach power plants

Up to 60%reduction in CO₂ emissions per plant by switching from coal to natural gas.
By 2035EnBW plans to eliminate its own carbon emissions by the end of this year.
Two plantswill initially operate using natural gas. By the mid-2030s, they are planned to be converted to hydrogen, enabling the CO₂-friendly production of electricity and district heating.
Over 60%efficiency will be reached by dual energy utilisation.
