In order to secure and expand Frankfurt's position as an international hub, the total capacity of the terminal facilities is to be increased. To this end, the new Terminal 3 (T3) and associated infrastructure are being built on the south side of Frankfurt Airport. At the same time, Cargo City South and the adjacent aprons are being expanded. This includes the construction of new passenger handling facilities in two construction phases. According to current plans, once completed in 2026, up to 23 million passengers per year will be able to depart or arrive at the new terminal. The floor space of the new terminal will be approximately 149,000 m² – equivalent to around 22 soccer fields. Taking all upper and lower floors together, the main building and the three piers will then cover a total area of approximately 403,000 m². The aim of the project is to construct the main terminal building with an arrivals and departures level, a marketplace, lounges, and piers H and J by 2023. The sustainable planning is to be confirmed by a certificate (DGNB or LEED). Drees & Sommer has been awarded the overall contract for construction management.
