Further characteristics

- 100 MW electrolysis capacity
- Two hydrogen compressors, each weighing over 180 tons and transported via inland waterways
- Integration into existing industrial and utility infrastructure (ports, grids and transport networks)
- A complex interface landscape involving over 15 stakeholders, including OEMs, planners, permitting authorities and grid operators
- Reuse of existing infrastructure at the site

The energy transition is taking shape in Hamburg. In the heart of the city's port, consortium partners Luxcara and Hamburger Energiewerke are developing the Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub. On the site of the former Moorburg coal-fired power plant, an industrial-scale 100-megawatt electrolyser will soon use wind and solar energy to produce green hydrogen. The facility will split around 100 million litres of water into approximately 10,000 tonnes of hydrogen each year, making a significant contribution to the decarbonisation of the port and local industry.

Comprehensive site transformation

Demolition and new construction are taking place on the existing site, which benefits from a direct 380 kV connection to the transmission grid. Numerous system components, including the electrolyser (the heart of the facility), media supply systems, auxiliary technical systems, civil engineering, storage units and compressors, are being integrated. Interfaces with suppliers, grid operators and regulatory authorities are also being coordinated. Two compressors, each weighing over 180 tons, underscore the industrial scale of the project.

Energy and infrastructure specialists from Drees & Sommer are providing their expertise. As experts in delivering large-scale technical projects, they are providing technical project management, engineering management, site supervision and construction monitoring services. Their involvement will support the realisation of another pioneering energy transition project.

With commissioning planned for 2027, HGHH is sending a strong signal about the future of energy by offering carbon-free power to the port, industry and transport sectors. This flagship initiative will see more than 50,000 hours of engineering work invested, marking a major milestone for Germany as a location for innovation.
