Renovation of Königin-Luise-Schule, Cologne

School buildings from the 1950s and 1990s have been thoroughly renovated and made sustainable

The students of the Königin-Luise-Schule in Cologne bustle about amid artistic glass concrete, classic plaster surfaces, and a colorful ceramic brick façade. The listed school consists of two wings: a typical 1950s building and the current gymnasium and educational center from the 1990s. The structured grid facade of the multi-wing complex is also typical of mid-century school architecture. The unique works of architects Peter Schneider, Oswald Ungers, and Georg Meistermann give the existing building its special vintage charm.

General refurbishment with a view to increased sustainability and monument protection.  

Drees & Sommer supported the client in the general refurbishment of the existing building as part of the City of Cologne's school construction package. The aim was to preserve the listed architecture of the 1950s. At the same time, those involved converted the school into an energy-efficient building that meets the requirements of modern school operations. Thanks to effective cooperation, the school was handed over to the user two months ahead of schedule. The final stage will be the completion of the outdoor facilities in the summer of 2026.
