Report on the separation of rainwater, Berlin-Lichtenberg
Rainwater management for the sponge city: Sustainable solutions for 24 properties
With innovative decoupling measures, the project supports the vision of the sponge city and ensures sustainable rainwater management in Berlin-Lichtenberg.
Background and objectives
On behalf of the School and Sports Office, the Lichtenberg Road and Green Space Authority plans to decouple the areas of 24 properties from the sewer network of Berliner Wasserbetriebe. Instead of discharging rainwater into the sewer system, it will be allowed to seep away on site. The project thus makes an important contribution to the implementation of the “sponge city” strategy and to adaptation to climate change.
Drees & Sommer is assisting with the preparation of a comprehensive report that outlines specific and feasible measures for rainwater management. These include:
- Analysis of the existing drainage situation
- Proposals for infiltration systems and collection tanks
- Schematic site plans and dimensions
- Integration of sustainable solutions for each property
Special challenges
The measures must be both technically and economically viable and take into account the different conditions at each location. In addition, coordination with Berliner Wasserbetriebe and compliance with subsidy requirements are essential.
Added value
- Contribution to sponge cities: promoting local rainwater infiltration
- Reduction of sewer load and relief for urban infrastructure
- Sustainable solution through adaptation to heavy rainfall events and climate change
Services
- Basic assessment
- Support with soil surveys
- Development of decoupling measures for each property
- Preparation of a report including site plans and dimensioning of infiltration systems
- Holistic planning from analysis to implementation of specific infiltration measures and efficient project management
