The city library on Mailänder Platz in Stuttgart is a cube aligned to the four cardinal points with a floor area of 44 x 44 meters and a height of 40 meters. The iconic building was designed by the Korean architect Eun Young Yi.
The heart is located in the center, where there is a 14-meter-high room designed to offer visitors a haven of peace. This is surrounded by an inner façade and is illuminated by a central skylight as a cube-shaped room in the center of the building. The gallery hall, which is a reading room in the shape of an inverted stepped pyramid, extends from the fourth to the eighth floor. Another attraction is the roof terrace with a view over Stuttgart. The building envelope is designed as a walk-in double façade and serves as a thermal and spatial buffer zone. The exterior wall is made of glass blocks and exposed concrete. The façade behind is made of glass. This means walkways have been created on all floors. Visitors and employees can use these as walkways or balconies.
Around 500,000 printed and digital media can be borrowed or viewed in the building on Mailänder Platz.
