Project duration

July 2019 – February 2028

Other characteristics:

- New line via Soltau and Bergen as the preferred option published by DB
- Reduction in travel time between Hamburg and Hanover from 79 minutes today to less than an hour
In the subproject handled by Drees & Sommer:
- Length of the new line 31 km in the preferred option (as well as other options with a route length of up to 48 km)
- 47 bridge structures
- 3 electronic signal boxes (ESTW)
- Feasibility study for 1 station
- Design speed of the new line: 250 km/h

As part of the Hamburg/Bremen-Hanover rail project, a new high-speed line is being built between Hamburg and Hanover to cope with growing passenger and freight traffic. The aim is to create a sustainable and resilient infrastructure that strengthens the region and the port-related industries.

The plans for the commissioned sub-project included four variants in two corridors with lengths between 31 and 48 kilometers and design speeds of up to 300 km/h. A planner selection process initiated the preliminary planning. In accordance with the BIM method, this was then implemented by a general planner. It includes all relevant trades – from transport facilities to civil engineering and environmental planning – and was managed according to lean principles.

The result: a new line along the A7 and B3 via Soltau, Bergen, and Celle was identified as the preferred option in the overall project. This meets the operational, economic, environmental, and regional planning requirements and will lead to an increase in rail capacity in northern Germany.

Drees & Sommer is responsible for project management withina sub-project and provides comprehensive services in project management, project control, and engineering consulting. In addition to classic project control tasks, the company also performs client representative functions.
