Office Buildings
WÆSCHEFABRIK Berlin
Historical heritage meets the modern working world: WÆSCHEFABRIK Berlin becomes a sustainable location for research and collaboration
The WÆschefabrik Berlin is a listed factory building, which was constructed between 1910 and 1912 as one of Berlin's first reinforced concrete structures. With its austere neoclassical style and striking inner courtyard, the five-storey complex is a listed building.
Transformation into a modern workplace
As part of the project, the historic building was redesigned into a vibrant workplace and research facility. Today, it offers flexible office workspaces, meeting rooms and areas for institutes to use for seminars and libraries. In addition, new communication areas such as a café and co-working spaces were created on the ground floor. Archive areas and technical centres were integrated into the basement.
Renovation under special requirements
The renovation was carried out in accordance with listed building and fire safety regulations. Through the use of sustainable technologies and the development of a new fire safety concept, the building was adapted to modern requirements in a future-proof manner.
Drees & Sommer took on comprehensive project management across all phases and ensured efficient processes, transparent communication and compliance with funding requirements. A particular challenge was coordinating the authorities involved, especially with regard to monument protection.
