Located in Lorenzer Platz, the heart of the Franconian city, this seven-story building is Sparkasse Nürnberg’s headquarters and is known as the “House of Customers”. The name is due to the institution’s advisory center, which occupies an entire floor of bright, digitized consultation rooms for clients. The building also includes fully automated safe deposit boxes, a co-working area with a coffee bar, and an event space in the basement. This refurbishment not only benefits Sparkasse’s clients, but also their 350 employees, creating a contemporary and pleasant working environment.

Embodied Carbon Savings

Drees & Sommer ensured that this project was delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards. This included upgrading the building’s technical systems to the latest standards in energy efficiency, fire protection, accessibility, as well as data and building infrastructure. Although the headquarters had undergone previous refurbishments since it was built in 1958, those renovations reflected standards from the 1990s. Now, the entire interior is brand new, including staircases, elevators, and the reception area. We also created an ingenious shelving and storage solution that provides Sparkasse with an additional 20% of usable space. During the project, we preserved the building’s distinctive exterior appearance and structural framework, saving significant amounts of embodied carbon compared to reconstructing the building from scratch. Together with the green roof and photovoltaic system installed on top, the energy savings achieved through this project resulted in a DGNB Gold certification.

Added Values

  • The project was completed within the agreed timeframe and budget, despite disruptions from COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine
  • An intelligent storage and shelving solution created 20% more usable space
  • We leveraged our extensive expertise in refurbishment and construction for existing buildings, including the renovation of properties under heritage protection
  • Successfully secured support for Sparkasse by obtaining funding through the Federal Funding for Efficient Buildings (BEG) program and achieved a DGNB Gold certification
